Betty Jean Edmonds
Betty Jean (Van Pelt) Edmonds, 82, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away August 25, 2008 at the Liberty Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Betty was born on April 14, 1926 in Ray County, Mo. She was the eleventh of fourteen children born to Charles and Zella Van Pelt. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Polo High School in 1945. Betty met her future husband, Warren Edmonds, on a blind date. They were married on August 20, 1949 and observed their 59th wedding anniversary this month. Betty and Warren made their first home together at Lake Waukomis, Platte County, Mo., and were among a dozen "pioneer" families who endured dirt roads and hauling of water in the early 1950's. Betty and Warren raised three children, Kathy (Brad) Long, El Dorado, Kans., Kent (Tracy) Edmonds, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Kurt Edmonds, Monument, Colo. Additionally, Betty and Warren lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nixa, Mo., before settling in Excelsior Springs to be near her sister. Betty was a wonderful homemaker, wife, and mother. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts and former member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church. She was an excellent seamstress and made many beautiful garments. Betty was happiest when surrounded by her family. News traveled fast through the Van Pelt "hot line." In addition to her husband, children and their spouses, Betty leaves behind nine grandchildren, Kristen (Craig) Scribner, Barrett (Stacie) Long, Brooke Long, Jesse (Lauren) Edmonds, Elesha Edmonds, Luke Edmonds, Lauriel Edmonds, Nick Edmonds, and Jacob Edmonds; five great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Avery Scribner, Carter and Brenna Long, and Corbin Edmonds; five sisters, Waneta Hatfield, Virginia Mallory, Maude (Bill) Brown, Charlene (Kenneth) Hogan, and Billie (Clifford) Allen; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Van Pelt and Patty Van Pelt; one brother-in-law, John D. Patton; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Zella Van Pelt; one sister, Allene "Sissy" Patton; three brothers, Jack Van Pelt, Kenneth "Pete" Van Pelt, and Bobby Don Van Pelt, and four infant siblings. Betty will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank Drs. Buzard, Schreier, Slovick, and Chatkupt, and the nursing staff of Liberty Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs, Mo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to The American Cancer Society, KC Metro Office, 6700 Antioch Road, Suite 100, Merriam, Kansas 66204.
