Larry G. Bemis, 61, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, September 1, 2008 at his home. Born July 7, 1947 in Antigo, Wis., he was the son of Gordon and Betty (Reynolds) Bemis. On April 14, 1973 in Schoolfield, Wis., he was united in marriage to Rita J. Madole who survives. He is also survived by a son, Dan Bemis and wife Elonna, Lawson, Mo.; his mother, Betty Bemis, Weston, Wis.; a sister, Sue Richardson and husband, Roger, Reedsburg, Wis.; his grandmother, Ella Wassman, Weston, Wis.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Lee Bemis. Larry was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving from January 9, 1968 to August 12, 1970. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans Association. In accordance with the families wishes, cremation services are private. Arrangements under the direction of Polley Funeral Home of Excelsior Springs, Mo.

I had the great privilege of serving Larry as one of his providers at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Kansas City. Though he suffered much loss in his life he did not lose his ability to give. He was an exceptional balance of strength and courage, on the one hand, and sensitivity on the other. Losing any of our veterans is felt deeply, but my grief in the loss of Mr. Larry Bemis is especially profound. He was a man of great significance to me. My deepest condolences to Rita and her family.
-- Dr. Daryl Richey

Danny,
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I was to hear about the passing of your Dad. I remember your Dad when he worked down at Westfall's. He was always so funny and would always talk to my Dad and myself. May God comfort you and your family in your time of loss.
-- LezLee Hamilton-Calandra

I'm sorry to hear about Larry. Have lots of good memories of old days at Rosemurgys and Wolfinger Motors. Lots of stories (some may have been true) from Larry and Red. Larry and his Dad will always be in my thoughts. Larry and Rita's home in Schofield was always open to anybody. I know because I bought that house from them and for a year after people were still coming in looking for them. Rita and Betty, I am truly sorry for your loss.
-- "Skinny" (Steve Kell)

Larry was an inspiration to me. He gave me courage in the face of adversity, through his own acceptance of and adaptation to disabling medical problems. His wry humor was always a joy, though surprising, given all that he'd endured. Even though he had plenty to deal with, he always wanted to know how I was doing and he took the time to tell me that he cared. I will miss him a great deal but will always remember him fondly. Rita and family, you will be in my thoughts, and my heart.
-- Bob Kennedy

Rita, Danny, Elonna, and grandchildren you are in my thoughts at this time. I am sad for your loss of a love but now the pain is gone. Larry was such a great man in helping my Steve and I know that Steve truly loved him. Danny you are a good son so be strong for your Mom.
-- Doris (Anderson) Sullivan

Dear Rita and Danny,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have such great memories of my papa smurf. He will be greatly missed. You both are in my thoughts.
-- Stephanie Elizondo - Oaks
